Caelan Doris Makes Irish Selection While Joe McCarthy Left Out

Ireland rugby team selection news

Returning head coach the Ireland coach has named skipper Doris in his Ireland roster for the autumn Tests, however Joe McCarthy has been excluded.

The captain, absent from play since having shoulder surgery in early May, recently returned to provincial training, but it remains unclear whether he will be ready to face New Zealand in Chicago on November 1.

Second row Joe McCarthy, however, did not make the cut after not recovering from the foot injury he sustained during the opening British and Irish Lions Test against Australia in the summer.

Ulster forward Izuchukwu and Munster wing Nash are not included due to injury, while number 15 Keenan had already been ruled out after having hip surgery following the Lions tour.

Dublin province forward Paddy McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the sole uncapped member in the 34-player squad, however Irish rugby authorities says uncapped Munster pair Edwin Edogbo and Gleeson and previously capped Connacht winger Shayne Bolton will travel to the US as "backup".

Following playing the New Zealand at the Chicago stadium in a repeat of their previous meeting, Ireland host Japan, Australia and world champions South Africa in Dublin.

"It's an exciting group to the squad and there's an opportunity for the more experienced members and for the newcomers on the summer tour to Georgia and the Lobos," said the coach, who returns to Ireland duty after a break to coach the British and Irish Lions to the southern hemisphere.

In a largely familiar-looking squad, Leinster's Sam Prendergast and the southern club's Jack Crowley will again compete for the starting fly-half spot. The number 10 jersey is still up for grabs, as the two players set to play against each other for the first occasion in the upcoming United Rugby Championship match at Croke Park.

Frawley is the third number 10 selected with Farrell opting against selecting Leinster's Byrne.

At number 9, the Ireland boss has selected British and Irish Lion Gibson-Park and Casey, who captained the national side to the summer international victories over Georgia and Portugal. There is also a return for the western province's Blade, chosen to teammate Ben Murphy.

Robbie Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey form an veteran cohort of midfield options. Jamie Osborne is another option in the midfield, but the youngster is also a frontrunner to deputise for Keenan at full-back.

Outside backs Lowe, Hansen, O'Brien and Stockdale are named. The winger shone on his national team debut during the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over Georgia and the Lobos.

Paddy McCarthy is the only fresh addition in the Irish forwards. The loose-head prop has been in a couple of Leinster's three United Rugby Championship matches so far and played in Ireland A's loss by England in Bristol previously.

McCarthy was selected in caretaker coach Paul O'Connell's summer selection, yet did not earn a international appearance.

Munster lock Ahern, who earned his debut appearances in those matches, is retained, while veteran Ulster lock Henderson returns after missing the summer matches.

Jack Conan, who played in each of the Lions Tests during the tour, is poised to cover for Doris if the skipper fails to recover full fitness soon enough to face New Zealand.

The Ireland squad will meet in the capital on the start of the week before traveling to Chicago on the following day.
